Within New Zealand, uPVC windows and doors are gathering more and more attention from every type of client.

Clause H1 of the New Zealand Building Code, which regulates the energy efficiency of buildings, was updated in November 2021 and the first phase of implementation began on Thursday 3rd November 2022.

This will see initial increases in thermal resistance or R value requirements for roofs, walls, floors, and windows and doors in effect for any buildings submitted for consent from this date.

Further increases follow on 1 May 2023 and again on 2 November 2023.

With these new restrictions the cold aluminum frames that are a common place in so many New Zealand homes will become a thing of this past.

Instead, compliance will require double-glazed low E IGUs combined with thermally broken aluminum, uPVC or timber frames.

For the upper North Island (climate zones 1-2):

• Windows and doors requiring an interim minimum R value of 0.37 by 3 November 2022, and further requiring a minimum R value of 0.46 by 2 November 2023.

Construction in the rest of the country (climate zones 3-6):

• These zones will be required to reach a minimum R value of 0.37 for all windows and doors by 3 November 2022 and increase this to R0.46 (zones 3-4) and R0.50 (zones 5-6) six months later, on 1 May 2023
