The essentials at a glance

Superior extraction: BORA cooktop extraction removes steam and odours directly at the source before they spread through the room.

Maximum design freedom: No overhead hood means more flexibility for open kitchens, window layouts and sloped ceilings.

Whisper-quiet performance: Advanced motor technology and base-mounted installation ensure significantly quieter operation.

Easy cleaning: All removable parts can be taken out easily and cleaned hygienically in the dishwasher.

What alternatives are there to a cooker hood?

In modern kitchen design, the status quo of conventional cooker hoods is increasingly being called into question. Whilst traditional hoods often obstruct the line of sight, take up valuable headroom and hinder communication within the room due to the noise they generate, discerning designers are seeking solutions that combine aesthetics and efficiency. The desire for an open-plan layout, in which the kitchen flows seamlessly into the living area, calls for innovative systems that neutralise cooking fumes – known as ‘cooking vapours’ – discreetly and effectively.

An overview of the most common alternatives

As well as the market-leading hob extractor system, there are various ways of doing away with the bulky hood hanging over your head:

  • The hob extractor (downdraft system): Arguably the most efficient alternative, which has had a significant influence on BORA. Here, the steam is extracted directly where it is produced: at the hob. This prevents grease particles and odours from spreading throughout the room in the first place.
  • Ceiling fan: These are recessed flush into the ceiling. Although they offer a clearer view than suspended hoods, they have to span a considerable distance above the hob, which reduces efficiency and often requires a more powerful (and noisier) extraction system.
  • Trough ventilator: It is another name for a hob extractor.
  • Table-top extractor fan: These extend upwards from the worktop behind the hob when required. Although they are functional, when extended they do take up space in your field of vision again and often require a lot of storage space in the base unit to accommodate the mechanism.

Cooker hood or hob extractor: a comparison

When choosing between a traditional cooker hood and a modern hob extractor, two worlds of kitchen design collide. Whilst a conventional cooker hood utilises the natural rise of cooking vapours, the hob extractor revolutionises the process by creating a targeted cross-flow.

Traditional cooker hoods (whether island or wall-mounted) operate above your head. They trap the rising steam before it spreads throughout the room. However, they often struggle with turbulence caused by cross-drafts and a reduction in suction power as the distance from the saucepan increases. Furthermore, they obstruct sightlines and often present an ergonomic barrier.

The BORA hob extractor extracts cooking fumes directly at the source. As the extraction rate is higher than the rate at which cooking vapours rise, they are drawn downwards before they reach the ambient air. This ensures effective odour removal and protects furniture and textiles from grease build-up.

How BORA cooktop extractors work

Why BORA sets the standard for air quality

The outstanding quality of BORA systems is evident in their uncompromising extraction performance. Thanks to BORA’s patented airflow technology, cooking vapours are extracted exactly where they are produced. Whether you opt for an extract-ventilation or recirculation system is of secondary importance when it comes to effectiveness: Both options ensure a supply of fresh air and prevent grease particles from settling on your high-quality furniture or in your clothes.

We suction away vapours directly from their source – at the cooktop itself. With patented technology that makes elegant use of physics: quietly, efficiently and powerfully. [...] "This idea has not only revolutionised the world of cooking, it has made BORA synonymous with a new way of cooking and with hobs featuring an integrated extractor."

– Willi Bruckbauer, founder and managing director of BORA

Important aspects of extractor hood alternatives

If you are looking to switch from a classic cooker hood to a BORA cooktop extractor, please bear the following points in mind:

  • Check that your kitchen has the necessary infrastructure for installation (space, ductwork for exhaust air solutions). BORA systems cannot be retrofitted in all kitchens without major alterations.
  • Installation - Whilst a traditional cooker hood can be installed by a skilled DIY enthusiast, the installation of a BORA cooktop extractor requires an experienced professional.
  • Maintenance - To ensure optimum performance, BORA systems also require regular cleaning and filter replacement.
