A Kitchen Reimagined

This project involved the renovation of a well-used kitchen within a character state home that had previously been extended. The brief was to create a highly functional, beautifully resolved space within a compact footprint, while respecting the character of the home through considered materiality and detailing. Working within existing structural and plumbing constraints, an L-shaped layout was developed to optimise flow, improve circulation, and maximise storage. This configuration allowed the kitchen to connect more naturally with adjacent living spaces while making the most of limited floor area. Functionality was central to the design, with a strong focus on practical, everyday use. A large bifold pantry with internal drawers provides exceptional accessibility, complemented by a dedicated coffee nook with open shelving for personal display. Drawer storage was prioritised throughout, while a carefully resolved bin system and integrated oil pull-out enhance daily efficiency. A peninsula anchors the space, offering seating that captures natural light and encourages connection. Subtle detailing, including a waterfall end and refined frame elements, elevates the visual impact of the benchtop and cabinetry. Materiality was carefully curated by Cathyn Davey of Re-vision to honour the home’s character, combining Melteca Parisian Oak, Geo Crema bush-hammered benchtops, and Plimepapilka White Matt tiles, finished with Lo & Co almond knobs in tumbled nickel. The palette introduces warmth, texture, and depth while remaining true to the home’s original era. The result is a compact yet highly resolved kitchen — warm, functional, and seamlessly integrated into the character of the home.
