After completing a major home renovation with Becker Building the clients were looking to redesign their garden to meet their new needs as their family grew. Their goal was to produce some of their own fruit and vegetables and, to do this, they asked us to create an organic permaculture garden with a focus on edible and native plants. 

The home sits on a north-facing block and, as a first step, the backyard needed an area that was shaded from harsh sun so that it could be enjoyed to its full potential. With this in mind, a pergola was constructed adjacent to the back verandah to provide additional space for the family to relax and entertain friends.

With the structural foundations for the backyard in place, rows of espaliered fruit trees, herb and vegetable gardens and a chicken enclosure were incorporated to create the perfect urban permaculture garden.

Formal hedges of olive trees and rosemary bushes, potted citrus and native plantings surround the backyard and lead to a stunning old plane tree at the front of the home.

Having a thriving and productive garden has been extremely fulfilling for the family, and has given them a unique and sustainable way to enjoy their home.
