FINALIST – TIDA NZ RENOVATION OF THE YEAR

Additions and alterations to an existing 3 bedroom 1990‘s bungalow reconfigure the floor plan to include an open plan lounge, dining and kitchen area with a double garage below, located in an additional wing in place of the existing carport. The new L shaped layout cradles a north facing terrace, accessible from both the living area and master bedroom, capturing all day sun and Rangitoto sea views. The alteration provides two bedrooms and a study, a spacious ensuite and walk-in wardrobe for the master bedroom, a separate guest bathroom and separate laundry.

To bring morning sun into the kitchen and prevent overheating, a large ventilating skylight spans the full length of the kitchen.

The resulting simple and bold L shape of the building is matched with simple and bold use of materials and colours. The existing roof lines and weatherboard cladding are echoed in the new addition. Dark aluminium joinery wrapping around the lounge north-west corner emphasises this concept. The sectional overhead garage door is also clad in weather boards to appear “invisible”.
