Following the devastation of the Christchurch earthquakes, much of Ōtautahi’s inner-city residential real estate became unsafe to inhabit. As a result, many sites were left completely empty. One such site, just northeast of Latimer Square, was chosen for use in the “Breathe Urban Village” competition, run by the Christchurch City Council in the early 2010s. Unfortunately, the site was left undeveloped after the completion of this project.

Collaborating with Foley Group, Mike Greer Homes and Peebles Group, DCM Urban Design worked to develop this site into a new urban village. This village, Madras Square, is a new mixed-use development with a mix of both residential and commercial property.

Composed primarily of townhouses, Madras Square houses 111 residential dwellings. DCM Urban Design's involvement has been primarily in the planning of the development, as well as working on the spatial design of the Square.
