Our client purchased a property designed by iconic architect Gerry Nigro in the 1950’s. The property was built for the Gerry Nigro and his artist wife Jan and was considered avant guard for its time.
All the cedar and glass features of the original mid century home had been retained but unfortunately the kitchen was a very small and narrow room that was in direct contrary to the spacious feel of the rest of the house.
Careful consideration was required to create a kitchen that would sit sympathically within the home. A wall was removed and external French doors added to give the kitchen space and winter sun. An internal kitchen wall was clad in vertical rimu panels which linked the kitchen to the adjacent rooms and provided a backdrop for the new kitchen.
Mid century kitchens traditionally had timber veneer doors set within white frames. We recreated this with Cedar veneer and 25mm white Melteca. An integrated fridge and dishwasher disguise the modern appliances and allow the framed Cedar to feature.
Stainless Steel marine edge benches with acrylic breakfast bar provide easy care surfaces.
Many visitors to the home have been surprised to find the new kitchen has blended beautifully into the home that has a strong 1950’s quirky feel.
