High-performance home designed for energy efficiency with optimal insulation, airtightness, mechanical ventilation, and high-performing windows and doors, ensuring a comfortable and durable living environment.
This high-performance build has some great examples of the design elements needed for a super energy-efficient home. The home was positioned to capture maximum sunlight, has high levels of insulation throughout, has Passive House standards of air tightness, a mechanical ventilation system, and German uPVC/aluminium thermally broken, double-glazed joinery.
Insulation
To prevent heat loss and stabilise your home's internal temperature, focus on insulating your home to a high standard, including foundations, floors, walls, and ceilings. This will maximise energy savings in the day-to-day running of your home.
Air Tightness
Maximising airtightness will enhance your home's energy efficiency, health, comfort and durability. We recommend setting an airtightness target with your design team as part of the initial design process.
Ventilation
Efficient ventilation is vital for creating a healthy, warm, and dry living environment and ensuring the building structure's durability. A continuous mechanical ventilation system is the best way to achieve this in an airtight home.
High Performing Windows and Doors
To ensure optimum thermal performance and airtightness, windows and doors must meet strict criteria, including double glazing as a minimum, thermally broken frames, and rebated within the wall frame instead of installing them flush with exterior cladding.
