The Three Sisters reimagines an early-1900s townhouse formed by combining two adjoining residences. The transformation sought to introduce greater openness, natural light and functionality while preserving the architectural character of the original building.
A contemporary two-level rear extension establishes a distinct contrast between old and new. Expansive glazing, dark cladding and warm metallic finishes create a refined material palette that complements the heritage residence without imitating its original architecture.
Material Selection: UniCote® LUX Brushed Copper
To introduce warmth and visual depth to the contemporary extension, UniCote® LUX Brushed Copper was selected as a defining element of the façade.
Part of the refreshed UniCote® LUX Signature Range, Brushed Copper is a patterned pre-painted steel finish that captures the rich metallic character of copper through subtle tonal variation and surface detailing.
Its warm appearance provides a striking contrast against the darker cladding, adding texture and visual interest while maintaining a cohesive architectural expression.
Architectural Performance and Design Flexibility
UniCote® LUX Brushed Copper offers architects a practical alternative to natural copper, combining its distinctive metallic aesthetic with the consistency of a manufactured pre-painted steel finish.
The controlled surface pattern provides a uniform architectural appearance across cladding applications, allowing designers to incorporate copper-inspired detailing without relying on the natural patination of traditional copper materials.
Subtle changes in light and viewing angle bring the finish to life, creating an evolving façade with depth and character throughout the day.
Architectural Outcome
The finished extension establishes a confident contemporary identity while respecting the proportions and heritage character of the original townhouse.
UniCote® LUX Brushed Copper introduces a layer of warmth that balances the darker façade elements and complements the extensive glazing. Its textured metallic appearance helps define the new architectural intervention without competing with the original residence.
The Three Sisters demonstrates how considered material selection can bridge heritage architecture and contemporary design. Through its copper-inspired finish, subtle texture and lasting architectural appeal, UniCote® LUX Brushed Copper delivers a distinctive solution for modern steel cladding applications.
