ArchiPro Project Summary - Retrofit of a heritage leather goods factory into a flagship educational training center featuring interactive lounge areas, sculptural voids, and a welcoming canopy, enhancing student engagement and natural light.

ArtMade was approached by clients who already have centers running in Sydney and Melbourne for educational training services. The client had secured a building with a vision to retrofit the building and make it their flagship training center. The building used to be leather goods factory, located in a heritage conservation area had timber structure (columns, beams and floor) with recent additions of fire stair and lift shafts.

ArtMade’s team focused on creating various opportunities for student- teacher and inter student interaction by allowing all lecture and tutorial rooms to spill out into large lounge areas.

A curvilinear void is strategically carved out in the center of the building which allows these lounge areas to have visual connections across levels. Another void has been introduced at the entry to allow a grand double height space. Direct visual connection has been achieved from the ground floor entry to the topmost lounge level.

Vertical circulation in the void further provides activity and interaction in the heart of the building. The proposed void and circulation spaces were conceived as sculptural elements providing the much-required uplift to the existing narrow and dimly lit corridors.

Timber cladding material has been proposed which brings in the warmth, luxurious and sophistication whilst also complimenting the exposed timber structure. The remainder areas are minimal to allow the structure and feature elements to stand out.

A skylight has been proposed at the roof level on top of the void to allow diffused natural light to enter and lighten the lounge areas.

An interpretation of the existing hoods (of the next-door neighbor) and the modern dynamic building emerging in the nearby context has been proposed in a form sleek canopy. The canopy is expected to define entry and welcome the students.

The proposal is under assessment by the Council.
