The design intent was to create a spacious and ‘open’ home for our clients, reflecting their move from the shores and glistening sunrises of Bondi to the verdant expanses of the Southern Highlands. The home’s orientation takes cues from the northern outlook of the existing rural homestead, weaving a seamless connection between the old and new. Despite the challenges presented by the existing structure, Tony of AO Design Studio committed to a sustainable approach, choosing transformation over demolition.

The carefully designed skillion roof with overhangs and blade walls, maximises passive solar heat gain in winter, while blocking excess heat in summer. Millenium Windows and Doors incorporated Series 424 Double Glazed CentreGLAZE™ Fixed Highlights throughout, taking advantage of the 7m of northern sun the structure invites into the core of the home.

The sun heats the entire floor throughout the day, which in turn radiates warmth in the evening.

The striking Series 618 MAGNUM™ Sliding Doors offer an uninterrupted 180-degree view from the open plan living, dining, and kitchen areas. A concrete plinth with fireplace doubles as overflow seating and an extra side table to the dining room. The versatile Series 618 Sliding Doors have been used in place of windows here to offer extra seating to the terrace when open.

The entire home flows seamlessly, thanks to the flush thresholds of AWS Windows and Doors, which pair perfectly with their FlowTHRU™ draining system.
