Sometimes the most special projects start in the simplest of ways. For Halliday + Baillie, the opportunity to play a part in the creation of Auckland City Mission’s HomeGround came about through a chance sighting of a social media post…

It was during the first set of lockdowns in 2020 that Halliday + Baillie’s director Tiffiny Hodgson saw an Instagram post from Stevens Lawson Architects – whom the hardware company had previously collaborated with on residential projects – giving an update on their project to bring Auckland City Mission’s new location to life.

The first purpose-built complex for the charity, HomeGround offers respite for people who are homeless, provides health services, therapy and activities such as art classes. It is also home to 80 apartments for longer term accommodation.

“For decades, Auckland City Mission had been squashed into buildings that weren’t really fit for purpose and weren't ever designed with their needs in mind. HomeGround flips that completely around – it’s a building that has been designed for them,” says Tiffiny. “It’s a project that was certainly long overdue and a wonderful way that we could help and give back to the community.”

Halliday + Baillie's hardware has been used on every floor of the building.

The hardware in the community spaces of the thriving central city hub were Halliday + Baillie’s contribution – its stair rail brackets, flush pulls and pull handles were used on every floor of the building.

These shared spaces, such as the laneway that the public can use to access the building, have high traffic and are used 24/7 – demanding quality hardware. Solid brass hardware, finished to black chrome, answers to this and performs on two levels: form and function.

“Just because something needs to be highly functional, doesn't mean it can’t be beautiful,” says Tiffiny.

While much of Halliday + Baillie’s previous work has been for residential properties, the team is excited to be moving into a wider range of commercial and community projects where the hardware designs continue to encompass quality, flair and functionality.

Similar to HomeGround, hardware in commercial spaces is often used countless times a day, making longevity a key priority.

To ensure each project has the right hardware for the style, function, and budget required, the Halliday + Baillie team are able to work with clients to craft and specify a personalised schedule. Being proudly locally made, the brand’s products also aren’t affected by overseas freight issues and prices are able to maintain more stability than imported ranges – a crucial aspect for many commercial projects.

“At Halliday + Baillie, attention to detail is key.”
