Without proper ventilation, moisture buildup behind cladding systems can lead to mould growth, structural degradation and compliance issues. To address this, Highwood Timber has introduced the HighFlow Cavity Batten, a game-changing solution made from premium-quality materials. Working to enhance airflow behind cladding to promote healthier, longer-lasting buildings
We spoke to Nick Higgins, Founder of Highwood Timber, on their innovative HighFlow Cavity Batten, discussing the importance of cavity ventilation, how the batten meets and exceeds compliance standards and why this is so important.
“We designed the HighFlow Cavity Batten to solve a real problem in the industry—builders were struggling to balance moisture control with structural integrity,” explains Nick. “By improving airflow and drainage behind the cladding, we’re helping builders create healthier, longer-lasting buildings that comply with the latest regulations.”
Why Was the HighFlow Cavity Batten Created?
The HighFlow Cavity Batten was developed to tackle a common issue in wall cavities: condensation buildup. Traditionally, cavity battens have focused on structural performance but often neglected airflow. Poor ventilation behind cladding can cause moisture accumulation, leading to mould, mildew and, ultimately, damage to building materials.
“Mould and mildew don’t just look bad—they pose serious risks to both the structure and the people inside,” says Nick. “Trapped moisture can degrade building materials over time and even contribute to airborne pollutants, which is why ensuring continuous ventilation behind cladding is so important.”
The key benefit is continuous airflow behind the cladding, preventing moisture from getting trapped and causing structural or health hazards.
What Makes HighFlow Cavity Battens Different?
Unlike conventional battens, HighFlow Cavity Battens feature a bevelled top edge, allowing water to drain away from the frame rather than pooling in the cavity. Additionally, ventilation grooves along the side help maintain consistent airflow, reducing the risk of mould growth.
These battens are crafted from high-strength, sustainably sourced Laminated Veneer Lumber (LVL), which is strong and stable, suitable for heavy cladding and available in longer lengths, meaning fewer joints and potential weak points. “One of the biggest advantages of using LVL is that it’s strong, straight and predictable,” Higgins notes. “Builders can trust that they’re getting a reliable, high-performing product every time.”
The combination of premium materials, structural integrity and superior moisture control makes the HighFlow Cavity Batten a standout choice for builders looking to improve condensation management without compromising on strength and durability.
How Cavity Ventilation Enhances Building Performance
Drainage - Directing moisture away from the wall cavity.
Ventilation - A minimum of 1000mm² per linear metre of airflow.
“Builders need to start preparing now,” Nick advises. “The HighFlow Cavity Batten is designed to exceed these requirements, making it a future-proof solution.” The HighFlow Cavity Batten achieves around 2000mm² of ventilation per linear metre, ensuring it meets and exceeds compliance standards - also staying suitable for Passivhaus construction.
Which Cladding Systems Work Best with HighFlow Cavity Battens?
The HighFlow Cavity Batten is versatile, compatible with anything from fibre cement to solid timber, vertical cladding layouts (such as timber shiplap) and sheet cladding systems. Since HighFlow Battens are installed horizontally, they work best with vertically installed cladding, ensuring proper drainage and airflow.
“We wanted to create a product that was easy to use across multiple projects,” says Nick. “Whether you’re working with timber, fibre cement or sheet cladding, the HighFlow Cavity Batten ensures moisture is properly managed.”
Why Choose HighFlow Cavity Battens?
As building codes become stricter, ensuring proper condensation management is essential. The HighFlow Cavity Batten is an easy-to-use, high-performance, high-quality solution that meets compliance standards while improving thermal efficiency and building durability. The key benefits for builders include improved moisture control, superior ventilation (exceeding NCC 2025’s proposed requirements), strong, sustainable construction, energy efficiency, versatility and easy installation.
“At the end of the day, good construction is about future-proofing,” Nick concludes. “By using HighFlow Cavity Battens, builders can ensure their projects are compliant, durable, and built to perform for years to come.”
