Established in 2017, Pimp My Garage was Davis’ solution to a familiar problem. “After tripping over the same bloody skateboard for the umpteenth time, I decided it was time to invest into our biggest asset by turning our double-garage into a second lounge,” Davis says. 

Finding a cost-effective building company that could provide a sleek storage solution, cohesive carpet, a sliding door to replace the old tilt garage door, lighting and power points — with one seamless point of contact — proved impossible, though. Seeing an opportunity to put his 30 years of advertising and marketing experience to good use, Davis and business partner, Tod Crosby started Pimp My Garage.

How does Pimp My Garage work?

Within 24 hours of receiving an inquiry, the Pimp My Garage team will follow up to learn more about the customer’s vision for the space. 

“For Auckland-based customers, we arrange a suitable time to meet on-site and scope their garage. This gives us an immediate feel for the space, the customer, their needs, and how they envisage interacting with the garage.”

If the customer is located outside of Auckland they will be sent a remote scope process requesting basic dimensions (or plans if the build has not been completed), images and/or a video, and a list of the items they need stored. 

“During the site visit, we make recommendations. This allows us to get a firm grasp on what works in the space, and, crucially, builds both a rapport and confidence that we have the right  tailored solution. Budgets are discussed but, generally speaking, customers who have not previously had experience with garage storage solutions or transformations tend to ask us for guidance and/or a ballpark estimate,” Davis explains.

Once the consultation phase is complete, the Pimp My Garage design team will make tailored recommendations on the most cost-effective, practical, and aesthetic solution for the space. This is presented as a quote that includes a mood board cover page with images of all the recommended products.

The installation process is generally completed within a day, though some larger-scale projects can take two days.

A tailored solution for a family garage

Working with a small footprint and minimal storage, the owners of this family home were in need of a multi-purpose space that could function as a gym, hang-out area, and storage room.

“Our customer wanted to maximise the garage potential by creating a multi-purpose space that included a gym area, food prep space for pantry overflow, entertainment, a study workspace for their two daughters, and storage for sports equipment and gardening tools. The brief was to provide a cost-effective, seamless, practical and aesthetically pleasing storage solution in their double garage,” Davis says.

The solution was to transform the garage into a break-out room for the kids, with a mix of complimentary closed and open storage, new lighting and additional power points, acoustic insulation, a new insulated sectional door, carpet tiles, and an architectural ply finish on the walls and ceiling. 

“Our integrated storeWALL slatwall system was installed next to the gym area with a tailored selection of hooks and accessories. This kept the fitness zone clean and tidy and provided quick and easy access to hand weights, ropes and bands. More integrated storeWALL, with a tailored selection of hooks for long-handled gardening equipment, was installed near the external pedestrian door with garden access. Long-handled items that normally reside leaning up in corners were now hung uniformly and at the ready. Next to this, surf racks were added for vertically storing several surfboards, similar to the way they are stacked in surf shops,” Davis explains.

A base cabinet combo with a custom bamboo bench top was installed for a clean food prep and storage area. For the clients’ two daughters, a combination of base drawer units with bench tops and wall cabinets was used to create a practical dual-workspace. 

“The customer is extremely happy with their transformed garage. I’m told the whole family uses this space all the time. This is what we aim to achieve with every garage we transform: to create a space that enriches the lifestyle of the home-owner and their family,” Davis says.
