By Wanaka Stone
The Alpha Series home designed by Condon Scott is located on an elevated site with spectacular views across Lake Wanaka. This home boasts high ceilings, wide spaces and clever nooks to create a sense of intimacy.
The owners loved schist and did a lot of research before deciding on the style of their stone cladding. They chose natural, almost rustically laid stone from Wanaka Stone; wanting to avoid anything that looked brick-like or manufactured.
This style accentuates the rugged and natural form of the stone and emphasizes the basic nature of the product. Aidan Butler, owner of Pembroke Schist, used Cluden Mixed Colour stone with a 'raked out' joint between each rock and used a range of stone shapes, textures and sizes on the walls to create the natural style the homeowner wanted.
Perched on a hillside, digger stacked walls were used in the wider landscaping to maximise the flat space around the home. Aspiring Earthworks built large and smaller sized dry stacked stone walls and placed rustic stone steps between the levels. The stone was all sourced from the same quarry ensuring the same tones and textures in the materials throughout the property.
The home has two outdoor living areas, one to the north and the other on the south. The south side living has a louvered roof allowing sun in or keeping it out. The two spaces, both with outdoor fireplaces, ensure a comfortable spot to get out of the prevailing wind or shelter from the strong mid summer sun at all times.
Wanaka Stone Ltd has been supplying high quality schist products since 2014, now supplying rock from two iconic Central Otago quarries. Both Poolburn and Cluden Stone Quarries have stood the test of time, having been operational for over 30 years each. Both quarries produce reliable, consistent stone and will still be operating for many decades to come.
Wanaka Stone Ltd provides schist stone from the Cluden Stone Quarry near Tarras and Poolburn Stone Quarry located in the Ida Valley, the heart of Central Otago. Cluden Stone is known for its earthy blue-grey and golden brown tones while Poolburn Stone is quintessential Central Otago schist with steely greys and plenty of brown, bronze and russet tones. Stone has been used for decades as a permanent cladding and to create beautiful features in homes and commercial buildings. It is low maintenance, timeless and distinctive.
Wanaka Stone Ltd provides a professional service that operates fully licenced and permitted operations ensuring a consistent and reliable supply. Using cutting edge technology – imported guillotines with 24 cutting teeth – we are able to deliver top-quality schist and value for money.
Locally Sourced – Eco-Friendly
Schist is a naturally formed building material with limited mechanical inputs, resulting in minimal carbon footprint. Massive quantities of rock are constantly forming and reforming in nature. The quantities extracted by us are negligible when compared to natural erosion rates.
