The Brief
As the founders of a highly successful enterprise, our clients know too well the juggle of a busy work schedule and young children. Our mission was clear: create a suite of personalised, versatile spaces to harmonise work and play.
Our Design Response
The most important aspect of this design was to strike the perfect balance of function and form. We wanted to make the most of the picturesque hinterland views, reference the unique architecture of the Cape Cod-style home and achieve a seamless integration with the landscape – all while ensuring maximum appeal for children and adults alike. A highlight is the Hampton’s style pavilion, which fundamentally creates a new room in the garden. Capturing cool hillside breezes, abundant natural light and stunning views of green vistas, the pavilion beckons a multitude of uses – from outdoor entertaining, lounging and dining to work. It’s a space designed with the environment in mind. Plantation shutters, a skillion roof and timber bifold doors allow for the easy adjustment of sun and airflow without having to rely on air-conditioning.
Catering for the children are swings and a sandpit attached to the pavilion, and a nearby hidden trampoline nook nestled below a sandstone retaining wall. Our clients opted to set up the pavilion as their work studio, with the extra benefit of being able to supervise their kids while working in their studio.
From the deck we added a pergola covered extension that opens to an alfresco dining space, with a nearby raised garden bed offering fresh herbs for outdoor cooking. We used native plants for longevity and cohesion, and locally sourced natural materials – such as red ironbark – to reflect the shades and textures of the bush.
This is quintessential modern-day living – a blend of inside and outside, work and play, beauty and functionality, aesthetics and sustainability.
