Haumoko House

The client was returning home to Christchurch after years living overseas and wanted a considered place to settle back into. The brief was clear: a home that felt grounded and calm, with a strong connection to the landscape and the expansive views the Clifton site offered. Haumoko House sits high on Clifton Hill, with the Avon Heathcote Estuary and coastal ranges stretching out beyond. The sloping site called for a design that could anchor itself to the hill while making the most of outlook, sun and the changing conditions of a coastal hillside position. Two offset volumes respond to the contours of the site and the orientation of the views. The upper form is directed toward the estuary and the ranges, while a timber-clad plinth grounds the home and ties it to the hill. That same timber carries through to the interior, bringing warmth and continuity from outside in. Outdoor living spaces are positioned on different sides of the house, offering shelter and sun at different times of day. A powder coated steel surround frames the outlook from inside while giving the exterior its form. The white edge against dark stained timber keeps the view crisp as light shifts through the day. A steel balustrade in the stairwell was designed to meet the practical requirements but not disappear, adding a structural line through the interior and a little considered detail to an everyday part of the house. The result is a home with a strong sense of place and a quiet confidence in its materials and composition. For a client coming home after a long time away, it offers exactly what was asked for: a settled, well-considered place to be.
