Set beneath the foothills of Remarkable mountains.
This Queenstown home has been designed as a contemporary response to the rural alpine setting, combining strong barn-like forms with a refined, architectural finish. Rather than competing with the surrounding mountains, the house adopts a simple and confident geometry, allowing the landscape to remain the dominant feature.
The building is expressed through two contrasting gabled forms. One is clad in dark vertical metal, giving the home a sharp, modern presence, while the adjoining stone volume introduces weight, texture, and a clear connection to Central Otago’s rugged material language. Together, they create a composition that feels both grounded and contemporary.
The entry is deliberately understated, with natural timber doors set into the darker façade to provide warmth and contrast. Large glazed openings are carefully placed to capture views, draw in natural light, and create a strong visual connection between the interior spaces and the surrounding alpine environment.
Native planting, gravel textures, and open courtyard areas soften the architecture and help the home settle into its rural site. The result is a modern Queenstown residence with a quiet strength — robust, elegant, and designed for its place.
