Delivered under a Public-Private Partnership, the Waikeria Corrections & Treatment Facility redefines secure environments with a focus on rehabilitation and mental health care. Designed to accommodate 600 prisoners, the facility includes Te Wai o Pure, a 100-bed forensic mental health unit providing culturally and clinically integrated care.
MODE, as Lead Consultant, delivered expertise across architecture, interiors, landscape design, and wayfinding, ensuring a secure yet restorative environment. The facility features advanced rehabilitation spaces, including classrooms, industry workshops, sports facilities, and green spaces, fostering personal growth and reintegration.
In collaboration with CPB Contractors and the Department of Corrections | Ara Poutama Aotearoa, the project integrates best-practice custodial design with New Zealand’s correctional reform goals, setting a new benchmark for humane and effective incarceration.
