Viking Dec-K-ing: Meet the all-in-one deck solution that waterproofs, beautifies and lasts

The story of Viking Dec-K-ing begins not on land, but at sea. Developed in the 1980s specifically for pleasure craft boat decking, this membrane system was engineered to withstand an environment where failure simply isn’t an option. From fishing rods, petrol tanks and anchors to constant foot traffic, saltwater spray and relentless UV exposure, boat decks face punishment that would destroy lesser materials.

That marine-grade toughness caught the attention of the construction industry, and for good reason. If a decking system could handle the harsh realities of life at sea, certainly it could handle backyard barbecues, outdoor furniture and New Zealand’s notoriously intense UV conditions.

Since the early 1990s, Viking Dec-K-ing has been proving this premise true, protecting homes and buildings across New Zealand with the same reliable performance that made it a marine industry favourite.

The all-in-one advantage

Where conventional approaches require separate waterproofing membranes hidden beneath timber decking or tiles, Viking Dec-K-ing combines waterproofing and finished surface in a single, hard-wearing vinyl sheet membrane.

The all-in-one design eliminates the gaps and crevices where water can pool and debris can accumulate. There’s no need for additional flooring systems or coverings. What you install is what you walk on: a complete waterproofing solution that also serves as the final, finished deck surface. This streamlined approach means fewer components, faster installation by trained Viking Approved Applicators, and most importantly, absolute confidence in watertight protection for the living spaces below.

New Zealand's intense UV conditions, which have destroyed many inferior products, hold no terror for Dec-K-ing. The membrane has been specifically formulated to resist UV degradation, drawing on lessons learned from marine applications where sun exposure is constant and unforgiving. Salt air, which corrodes traditional deck materials in coastal areas, has no effect on the vinyl membrane. This resilience makes it particularly valuable for beachfront properties and coastal developments.

Beautiful by design: Available in seven carefully curated patterns (Sandy Land, Sandy Pearl, Stonehenge, Prairie Barn, Sand Pebble, Country Cottage and Baltic), each design brings warm, natural tones that complement both contemporary and traditional New Zealand architecture. Each finish has been selected for its ability to blend seamlessly with residential and commercial settings, from coastal homes to early learning centres.
Grip where it counts: A beautiful deck that’s slippery when wet isn’t just inconvenient, it’s dangerous. Viking Dec-K-ing’s embossed surface delivers genuine traction underfoot, making it ideal for areas where safety is paramount. From school ramps and early childhood play areas to commercial walkways and family decks, the enhanced grip provides confidence in all weather conditions.
Waterproofing you can trust: Viking Dec-K-ing’s effectiveness lies in its heat-welded seams. Unlike mechanical fasteners or adhesive-only systems that can fail over time, Dec-K-ing’s vinyl membrane sheets are joined with 25-millimetre lapped seams that are welded together using heat. This creates joints that are as strong as the membrane itself, with no vulnerable points for water to exploit. The reinforced polyester mesh scrim embedded within the sheet provides exceptional puncture resistance while allowing the membrane to flex with building movement, critical in New Zealand’s variable climate where substrates expand and contract with temperature changes.
BRANZ Appraisal: Viking Dec-K-ing meets New Zealand Building Code requirements and can handle the toughest conditions our country can deliver. More than just meeting standards, though, it’s backed by a comprehensive 20-year product warranty.

The marine heritage translates directly to residential and commercial applications where children play, elderly residents walk, and families gather, regardless of whether it’s been raining.

The grip comes from the same design features that made Dec-K-ing essential for boat decks, where maintaining footing on a moving, wet surface can be a matter of safety.

More than 30 years of New Zealand installations tell a compelling story. From Auckland primary schools to coastal homes, from commercial surf clubs to multi-unit apartments, Viking Dec-K-ing has proven its mettle across diverse applications and demanding environments.

For architects, builders and homeowners seeking a deck solution that lives up to its promises, Viking Dec-K-ing offers something increasingly rare: genuine innovation backed by genuine performance. It’s a deck you can truly live on. Protected, beautiful and built to last.
