Warmset and Engineered Timber: A Marriage Made in Heaven.

It’s a valid question. Unfortunately, there is often a lot of outdated information circulating — and this leads to hesitation when combining timber flooring with modern underfloor heating systems.

Let’s clarify what works, what doesn’t, and how Warmset’s technology is uniquely suitable for use under engineered timber.

Engineered Timber = The Right Choice for Underfloor Heating

Solid timber floors and underfloor heating are usually not a good match — solid timber is prone to movement, shrinkage, and warping when exposed to temperature and humidity changes.

Engineered timber is designed to overcome these issues. Its multilayer construction ensures excellent dimensional stability — ideal for use with underfloor heating, provided correct installation guidelines are followed.

After all, consider that engineered timber floors with underfloor heating are a very popular choice in Italy and Europe, where underfloor heating is the default heating solution and has been for several years.

Some Timber Resellers Still “Exclude” Underfloor Heating – Why?

You may encounter floor resellers or manufacturers who say they will not warrant their timber if heating is installed underneath.

Why? In many cases, this is not because the timber is technically incompatible — but rather because:

• Many older heating systems (hydronic or electric cables) caused thermal shock or uneven heat
• Poor installations led to damaged floors and claims in the past
• Many timber floors sold in Australia are imported from Asia, where quality can be inconsistent, so resellers exclude underfloor heating to limit their liability just as a blanket approach
• Many resellers are simply not aware of modern heating technologies like far-infrared low-density systems (such as Warmset). It is not strictly their area of expertise, so they go by “general knowledge”.

Why Warmset Works with Engineered Timber

Warmset’s unique far-infrared heating mats have several advantages over other underfloor heating systems:

• Low power density (typically between 65 - 100W/m²), with an even spread across the floor
• The temperature of Warmset’s heating strip never exceeds 35°C when in full operating mode – that’s gentler than hydronic and far lower than electric cable
• When working to maintain the set room/floor temperature, the strip normally operates at between 22 – 26°C – hardly a risk for any floor.
• No hot spots, no thermal shock, no cable coils
• Flexible zoning, with floor sensors in each room to ensure the floor temperature does not exceed the critical 26°C as per common guidelines

Installation Matters!

Even with the best engineered timber and heating system, installation is key:

• Check the recommended subfloor moisture level
• Timber moisture content should be 8-11%
• Correct adhesive should be used — rated for underfloor heating
• Floor sensors should be installed to regulate temperature
• Gradual commissioning is recommended to “acclimatise” the timber to heating

In Summary

• Engineered timber and Warmset underfloor heating are highly compatible
• Warmset’s modern FIR system is one of the most suitable and gentle solutions for use under engineered floors.
• If you are working with quality timber and experienced installers, you can safely enjoy the beauty of timber floors and the comfort of underfloor heating.
