When it comes to roofing, colour is far more than a cosmetic choice, as the quality of the paint system used determines whether your home’s street appeal endures or fades within just a few years.
When selecting a roof, many homeowners assume that the colour is simply a cosmetic choice, but in reality it is critical to the long-term protection of the steel and the look of your home. Depending on the paint system used, it could mean the difference between a roof that fades after a few years, and a roof that lasts for the long term.
The technology used to paint steel varies widely across steel roofing products. Here, we speak to Colorsteel’s technical expert, Divya Kumar, who explains what to look for in pre-painted steel coatings.
What to consider when choosing roofing colour
In New Zealand, UV levels are among the highest in the world. This means that for our roofs to last, they have to have exceptionally durable coatings, ones that are designed for our often harsh New Zealand environment.
“Colorsteel pre-painted steel is specifically engineered and tested for these conditions,” shares Divya. “The coating system isn’t just about pigment, it’s about ensuring long-term colour stability and substrate protection.”
Colorsteel is manufactured on base steel produced by New Zealand Steel and is designed to resist fading, chalking, and corrosion. It is initially coated with a high-performance metallic alloy coating with the addition of magnesium, which helps prevent corrosion.
“Then a three-layer organic coating consisting of an anti-corrosive and bonding pre-treatment layer, an anti-corrosive primer and a top coat are applied to both sides of the material,” shares Divya.
This level of protection enables Colorsteel to offer a perforation warranty of up to 50 years for their pre-painted steel products - a guarantee that not many other coated steel products offer.
In coastal environments, it's particularly important to choose a steel with a high-quality coating.
Performance by design
Colour selection is often framed as a purely visual decision. Choosing between greys, whites, earthy tones or bold architectural statements can be a really enjoyable part of the design process. But Colorsteel’s colour palette is as much about performance as it is about design, shares Divya.
“Lighter colours can help reflect heat, darker tones offer dramatic contrast, and each finish is backed by coating technology developed for durability in New Zealand conditions.”
In this way, specifying genuine Colorsteel becomes both an aesthetic and a performance decision, influencing thermal behaviour, longevity, and long-term value.
Colorsteel's three-layer coating means it's guaranteed to last up to 50 years.
Why authenticity matters
In a market where similarly named or visually comparable products exist, understanding what is being installed is crucial. Genuine Colorsteel is designed specifically for New Zealand environments and backed by product warranties that reflect confidence in its coating performance. For homeowners, architects, and builders, that distinction can mean the difference between a roof that matures gracefully and one that prematurely fades, or worse, fails.
A roof represents a significant portion of a building’s visible envelope and when colour fades, so too can the perceived value of a home. Its appearance influences street appeal, resale value, and overall architectural coherence.
“Genuine Colorsteel protects against premature fading, helping ensure a roof remains both functional and beautiful for years to come,” shares Divya. “Ensure you ask your supplier or builder for written confirmation of the product solution, gauge, and colour, to make sure you’re getting a product that will last.
