South West Metro Study.

Architecture AND were engaged by the Office of the NSW Government Architect and the Department of Planning and Environment to prepare a ‘fine grain study’ of the precincts surrounding a grouping of stations on the proposed South West Metro line - Sydenham, Lakemba, Wiley Park and Punchbowl.

The strategy focussed on the identification of existing assets; distinctive urban forms, patterns and structures that provide identity and a recognizable sense of place, leveraging these assets to create opportunities to re-invent the precincts.

The cluster of early twentieth century industrial development of the Sydenham Enterprise Area was identified as a primary asset. Selective gestures provide improved connection between these built forms, pedestrian networks and existing landmark elements, supporting hospitality and creative uses in coexistence with the light industrial characteristics of the precinct.

The sweep of Railway Parade is reconceived as a linking pedestrian horseshoe, providing walkable continuity between Victoria Road, Marrickville Road, the immediate station precinct and the reservoir precinct.
