Thomas House reworks a modest late nineteenth-century timber worker’s cottage into a multigenerational family home.
The project is guided by a simple belief: that heritage value lies not only in the building itself, but in the pattern and character of the street around it. Rather than competing with the original cottage, the new work is deliberately restrained, allowing the historic house and its relationship to the streetscape to remain clearly legible.
The property is listed as a local heritage item on the North Sydney Local Environmental Plan as 26 Thomas Street. The property neighbours a matching house at 28 Thomas Street and is located within the Union, Bank and Thomas Streets Conservation Area. Together they are examples of single-storey timber workers’ cottages associated with the early residential subdivision of McMahons Point in the late nineteenth century. They form a matched pair that contributes strongly to the scale and character of the Conservation Area.
Thomas House was designed for the a family of three adults and four children living together across three generations. The brief called for a home that could bring the extended family together while still providing moments of quiet retreat. The design carefully balances shared and private spaces, allowing the house to feel lively and social while maintaining comfort and calm.
Thomas House demonstrates how small, historically modest buildings can be re-worked with architectural intent to support contemporary family life, contribute positively to the public realm, and reinforce the cultural continuity of Sydney’s inner-harbour suburbs.
