The outdoor bath has moved from resort amenity to residential brief. For architects and interior designers, it is a chance to extend the bathroom into the landscape. It also adds structural, plumbing and material decisions that need resolving early. Volupto's freestanding stone composite baths are designed for both indoor and outdoor projects, and made to order. This guide covers what to resolve at design stage.

Structure and setting-out

A filled freestanding bath plus bather is a significant point load. Confirm the slab or deck framing with the engineer, and set out the bath with clearances for cleaning and access on all visible sides. On timber decks, allow for a solid plinth or slab insert beneath the bath.

Services

Resolve hot and cold supply, mixer position (floor-mounted or wall-mounted) and the waste connection before the bath is ordered. Check local council and plumbing requirements for an external waste connection, and plan fall on the surrounding surface so splash water drains away from the bath base.

Material and finish

Volupto stone composite is a dense, solid material with a smooth matt finish. Every design is available in every one of our 18 colours, so shape and colour can be chosen independently. Wall thickness varies by design:

Design Sizes (L × W × H) Walls

  • Brancusi (two-person) 1800 × 900 mm 25mm
  • Raphael (round) 1300 to 1500 mm diameter 30 to 40 mm
  • Botero (banded oval) 1750 × 920 mm 25mm

For outdoor bathing for two, specify Brancusi at 1800 mm: its 900 mm width gives two people room to sit facing each other, and it holds its presence as a sculptural object in an open courtyard or on a deck.

Colour carries the bath into its setting. Graphite ties it to stone, concrete and timber decking. Garnet, a deep burgundy, brings warmth against sandstone, terracotta and native planting, and makes the bath the focal point of a garden.

Continuity between inside and out

Specifying one design in two locations, for example ensuite and courtyard, gives a project a consistent design language across the threshold. Every Volupto bath is made to order, so model and colour can be matched exactly.

The scheme can extend beyond the bath. A matching basin and pedestal in the same colour completes an outdoor bathroom or garden wash station, or ties the external bath back to the vanity inside. One material and one colour then carry through the whole project.

Lead times and delivery

Lead time is 12 to 16 weeks from order. For projects targeting summer handover, specification needs to be locked in by spring. Volupto delivers Australia-wide and works with architects, designers and builders from single pieces to multi-bath developments.
