Create the perfect mood no matter the event with Switch Lighting’s guide to lighting outdoor spaces.

As the days grow longer and the temperatures rise, backyards everywhere are preparing to host summer evening gatherings. Whether you’re dusting off the barbeque or firing up the pizza oven, one thing is for sure: you’ll need a good lighting set-up to make the most of your outdoor space. To help you create an entertainment space that is both functional and inviting, Switch Lighting shares their expert advice on outdoor lighting — from layouts to fixture styles.

How to create mood and atmosphere in your outdoor space with lighting

“To create an inviting outdoor space we suggest you start by identifying areas in your garden where lighting would be both functional and aesthetic. Common locations include pathways for safety, seating or dining areas for atmosphere, and focal points such as trees, sculptures, or architectural elements to enhance the landscape’s visual interest,” Switch Lighting’s Co-Founder and Managing Director Gerard Woods says.

Layering your lights — using different lighting styles such as ambient, accent, and task lighting — is a great way to add dimension and create atmosphere. For your focal points like trees, sculptures, or architectural details, Gerard recommends using Spot-LIGHTZ or Spot-LIGHTZ Mini to highlight these features and create visual interest.

“Warmer colour temperatures are ideal for creating an inviting atmosphere, especially around seating and dining areas. Amber lighting looks warm and attractive and has the added benefit of reducing insect attraction after dark. This is because insects are more sensitive to shorter wavelengths like blue and UV light, which are present in bright white light. In comparison, amber light emits primarily longer wavelengths which is less appealing to them,” Gerard explains.

To give yourself complete control over your environment it’s also a good idea to incorporate dimmable or colour tunable lighting. This allows you to adjust the brightness levels and colour temperature to match the mood of the evening.

For your focal points like trees, sculptures, or architectural details, Gerard recommends using Spot-LIGHTZ or Spot-LIGHTZ Mini to highlight these features and create visual interest.
For hands-free convenience and energy savings, Gerard recommends installing sensors for lights around pathways and entry points.

Choosing the right lighting style and fixtures

Switch Lighting designs and manufactures various lighting styles to suit each of your lighting applications.

“For illuminating walkways, our Switch Lighting Path Light 1 or Pillar Light 1 and 2 are a great option,” Gerard says. “When choosing lighting near seating areas, it’s important to layer your illumination to enhance the mood for entertaining and enjoying this space into the night. The Switch Lighting Wall Light provides an interesting single or double point of illumination around the outer edges of a dining area; offering multi-directional lighting, these fixtures create a harmonious ambience with both upward and downward flows of light.”

Gerard says it’s also important to choose deep-recessed, low-glare luminaires if you are lighting from above.

“Dimmable or tuneable white is the ultimate choice for soft, elegant lighting that really sets the mood. Another good option is installing the Multi-Lightz Eyelids along outer walls or under benches to provide a gentle indirect ambient glow that enhances comfort without harsh direct light exposure.”

When selecting your fixture styles, you want to balance functionality and aesthetics to ensure your space looks beautiful and is enjoyable to spend time in.

“Fixtures with sleek, modern designs complement contemporary landscapes and architectural designs,” Gerard says. “Materials and finishes like black or copper can also make a big impact. Black fixtures create a bold, sophisticated look that contrasts beautifully with greenery by day while blending into the dark of night, and copper luminaires bring warmth with graceful aging that adds character over time.”

For hands-free convenience and energy savings, Gerard recommends installing sensors for lights around pathways and entry points. Switch-operated lights are best for entertainment areas as they allow for more control over the ambience and mood — especially if you have brightness and temperature adjustments.

“For homeowners seeking enhanced flexibility, Switch Lighting Intelligent Controls offer a sophisticated solution for outdoor lighting. These smart controls, compatible with our Tunable White luminaires, allow for precise adjustments to colour temperature and brightness — creating the perfect setting for any outdoor event. With options like the SLiC Push Button Controller and SLiC Rotary Controller, you can easily transition between lighting scenes or moods, bringing your landscape to life with just a touch. This added versatility makes Switch Lighting Intelligent Controls an ideal choice for maximising the ambience and functionality of your outdoor space.”
