The latest in fireplaces: linear designs, efficient heating and easy installations

Installing a new fireplace can be an expensive endeavour, but they are also an investment that can completely upgrade the look and feel of a space.

“When choosing a fireplace, the main considerations include the aesthetic, heating requirements and your lifestyle,” says Daryl Crowley from Horizon Fires.

“If you require a primary heating source for a large area, then a slow combustion wood fire may be best suited. If you require a strong visual but have a primary heat source, then a radiant ambient feature fire may be better suited.”

SLR-X gas fireplace

New to the range at Horizon Fires, the Heat & Glo SLR-X gas fireplace is an elegant option that heats 70 to 80 sqm of indoor space.

“The advantage of the Heat & Glo balanced flue gas fire is they can offer an efficient space heating solution as well as great visual appeal.”

Driven by innovation, Heat & Glo introduced balanced flue technology in 1987 – forever changing the way fireplaces function. With an eye for design, paired with innovative technologies, Heat & Glo continues to develop fireplaces that successfully strike the balance between form and function.

“We have found the balanced flue gas market is trending towards linear shapes with accessible flue options, such as the SLR-X,” says Daryl. “This particular range of gas fireplaces are best suited indoors, as they are very effective at heating the air in an enclosed living space.

“The SLR-X utilises a natural draft-balanced flue system which provides flexible installation options without the use of a flue fan. Its zero clearance also means it can be installed into a timber frame – this is a much more cost-effective method than having to enclose a fireplace in masonry and considerably less time-consuming,” says Daryl.

Inside the SLR-X, a reflective glass liner radiates the fire and intensifies the flame.

“The SLR-X model has variety of media options including natural logs, driftwood logs and a pebble set. There is a choice between three stylish trim colours: black, graphite or stainless steel.”

Generally, the SLR-X is priced between $9,500-10,500 depending on the media and trims chosen and the flue configuration, says Daryl. “Installation is quoted by a local installer on site.”

When it comes to running costs, all Heat & Glo products are a sealed firebox, ensuring a high efficiency is maintained – this includes Heat & Glo’s other popular fireplaces utilising the balanced flue technology, including the Mezzo, the X-Series Freestander and the 5X gas fireplace.
