A transformative extension of a heritage minors’ cottage, featuring a spacious open-plan living area, three bedrooms, and two bathrooms, designed to harmonize with its urban environment while overcoming challenging geotechnical conditions.
A total rehaul of a dilapidated minors’ cottage within a protected heritage zone and major overland flow path made for a challenging and extremely rewarding project. Working with the passionate and design-driven clients we re-piled, straightened and re-lined the existing building to include three bedrooms, two bathrooms and then extended the lofty open plan living extension which was subject to major engineering due to the poor geotechnical conditions below.
The voluminous living extension achieves the expansive open plan via exposed steel portals, paired with negative detail and brick veneer. The form is fully glazed in cedar joinery to the east, opening onto the extensive deck and private landscaped area. The interior is punctuated with skylights and high windows to maintain natural light and privacy within the urban setting.
The home functions as well for family life as it does for a party of 50, a testament to the repeat client’s vision and perseverance on a difficult site with limited access.
