Heritage Renovation

Completed in 2025, this residential renovation on Edinburgh Street, Richmond, demonstrates BY Projects Architecture’s considered approach to reconciling Victorian heritage with contemporary living. The design preserves the residence’s distinctive architectural character while improving spatial continuity, enhancing natural light and establishing a cohesive material palette. Within the elongated hallway, polished timber flooring and graceful arched detailing retain a tangible connection to the home’s origins, complemented by restrained contemporary interventions.  The reconfigured kitchen forms the centre of everyday domestic life, combining warm timber cabinetry with crisp white surfaces and carefully integrated joinery. A generous island provides an inviting setting for informal gatherings and entertaining, while streamlined finishes emphasise material quality and proportion. This balance of functionality and refinement continues in the bathroom, where a sculptural vanity, terrazzo flooring and a black-framed shower enclosure are complemented by vertically laid timber-toned tiles, introducing warmth and architectural definition.  Throughout the residence, natural timber, warm neutrals and selectively introduced feature materials establish a coherent relationship between existing and contemporary elements. The resulting interiors offer understated sophistication without diminishing the building’s historical identity, demonstrating how a sensitive renovation can honour architectural heritage while accommodating the practical requirements of modern residential life.
