Intuitive design meets spa culture: the future of personal hygiene

Gone are the days of the toilet we know. The future looks very different, and it’s a place where Japanese spa culture meets German precision engineering. We spoke to Robertson Bathware about the futuristic shower toilet.

Hung on a wall, it is an integral part of the bathroom. For the unaware, it does not immediately appear too different from the traditional toilet. However, it couldn’t be further from what we are used to. This sculptural piece of ceramic encloses technology that is changing the way we see and use the bathroom. Known as the Sensia Arena, it is a shower toilet, imagined as a piece of equipment that redefines the concept of the bidet, blending Japanese spa culture with precision German engineering.

As a person nears, it becomes clear this is something different. “When a person approaches it, the sensor will recognise their presence and the lid will open automatically,” Robertson Bathware’s James von Batenburg says. “As a person walks away, the lid will shut again.” It’s not just its smart sensor that sets this apart though; this is technology that goes beyond the norm. “From self-cleaning to intuitive function, it is a whole new experience.”

The Sensia Arena can be programmed on an app or on the control panel which sits on the wall near the unit to configure different users and move through a series of functions, each designed for an individual user. 

“When flushing, a strong vortex action creates an extra-powerful flush that thoroughly cleans all areas of the bowl every time. The toilet will flush automatically every time a user stands up, and the flush can be programmed for two, six or 10 seconds.”

The self-cleaning ability is due, in part, to Grohe’s AquaCeramic technology, which creates a smooth, hydrophilic layer on the ceramic surface of the bowl that dirt and limescale can’t stick to, ensuring there are no residues left after flushing. “This means there is no need to use harsh chemicals, which makes it safer for the family, environment and for people with allergies,” James says.

 As soon as a user sits on the seat, an odour extraction system is automatically activated, drawing air out through the plumbing and forcing fresh air into the area. Part of the allure of this type of technology is the integration of the concept of the bidet. In the case of the Sensia Arena, that concept is unified in the shower cleaning arm, which removes or lessens the need to use toilet paper.  

“The two shower arms are adjustable, and can be adapted via the app or control panel to ensure the best position for every user. “The oscillating spray heads move in a gentle forward and backward motion for an extended cleaning area and extra freshness,” James says. 

“The shower spray technology allows you to choose spray type, spray strength and position individually. It was developed to create an experience of cleansing that is powerful yet still gentle, always precise and tailored to individual taste.”

Following the shower spray, a warm air dryer provides fast and gentle drying. 

Along with the control panel and app capabilities, the Sensia Arena’s functions can all be accessed by remote control. Basic functions can also be controlled directly from the seat. At night, the shower toilet is lit inside the pan by a soft light.
