The kitchen is the heart of the home and should extend beyond an aesthetically pleasing space—it should enhance daily activities such as cooking and entertaining through maximised functionality.
Minimalism in kitchen design is a growing trend, loved for it’s open space plan, seamless integration and effortless maintenance, but achieving the perfect balance between minimalism and maximised functionality can prove somewhat difficult.
We turn to Stefano Di Giovanni, Australian Company Manager for BORA, a company that specialises in transforming kitchens into functional living spaces that echo the epitome of home. We explore the principles of ergonomic design and how small changes can help homeowners achieve the perfect modern, minimalist kitchen design.

Creating the Illusion of Space with Minimalist Design
Minimalism in kitchen design is much more than a sleek appearance—it’s also about optimising the space you have and keeping efficiency at the forefront of design decisions. “More open space, less clutter, and a ‘less is more’ approach creates cleaner lines, reduces maintenance and makes movement within the space more fluid,” explains Stefano. One key element that enables this transformation is the use of 2-in-1 cooktop extractor systems. By eliminating bulky overhead range hoods, valuable space frees up for cabinetry or shelving, naturally making the space feel bigger and improving the overall ergonomics.
Open-Plan Kitchens: What to Prioritise
A well-executed open-plan kitchen should not only look refined but be easy to maintain. Stefano emphasises the importance of integrating appliances into your kitchen rather than making them focal points. “Less exposed appliances, an integrated look, cleaner lines and more joinery create a seamless, low-maintenance kitchen. 2-in-1 cooktop extractors perfectly complement this trend, ensuring a neat and modern aesthetic,” tells Stefano. With fewer visible elements, the kitchen remains effortlessly stylish and practical for busy lifestyles.
The Power of Decluttering
A streamlined kitchen design isn’t just about appearance—it’s about efficiency. Reducing clutter allows for a cleaner, more contemporary look and feel while enhancing usability. “Cleaner lines are desirable, and low-maintenance designs cater to busy working families,” says Stefano. “Integrating appliances where possible and increasing cupboard space above the cooktop with 2-in-1 extractor systems makes the kitchen both practical and visually appealing.” By prioritising smart storage solutions, homeowners can achieve and maintain a sleek, uncluttered space.
The Rise of the Kitchen Island
In modern kitchens, the kitchen island has become an essential feature, doubling up as an entertainment space and a place to work or unwind. “Islands are extremely popular now,” says Stefano. “People eat at their islands, and larger benches can accommodate up to six or eight seats. The key to great entertaining is to never turn your back on your guests while cooking.” This is also where a 2-in-1 cooktop extractor shines, as it allows for seamless island cooking, keeping hosts engaged with guests while preparing meals. Additionally, there’s something sentimental about setting up and presenting food along a kitchen island, enhancing entertaining and creating an ‘open home’ sort of feel.
Balancing Modernity with Warmth and Practicality
Contrary to popular belief, achieving a sleek, modern space doesn’t mean sacrificing the warmth of a home and the practicality of a well-equipped kitchen. Stefano actually believes the opposite, explaining that open-plan kitchen designs that seamlessly blend into living areas help to maximise the space, create a cohesive flow and lower the boundaries between kitchen and living space. “An integrated, clean-finish kitchen contributes to a modern home, offering better use of space and less clutter while maintaining a warm, inviting atmosphere,” he explains.
To conclude, minimalist design, when done right, is about more than just a clean look—it’s about achieving comfort, functionality and effortless living. By introducing smart, space-saving solutions like a 2-in-1 cooktop extractor, homeowners can achieve a kitchen that is both modern and practical. Whether you’re curating your space for hosting and entertaining or cooking family dinners at the end of the day, an ergonomic kitchen embraces both the experience and the aesthetics of modern living.
