Thinking about solar but not sure where to start? You’re not alone. Between kilowatts, inverters, and all the different shapes and sizes of NZ homes, it can feel like a lot to take in.
To help you make an informed decision, here are seven key questions to ask your solar provider before you commit, as well as some initial guidelines to get you going in the right direction.
1. What size system do I need?
Every home is different. A good provider will look at your power use, roof space, and any future plans, like getting an EV or adding a spa, before recommending a system size.
When a supplier does give a recommendation, it’s important to ask how they calculated the recommendation. Rheem Solar Solutions designs systems specifically for Kiwi homes - whether you’re a busy household or looking to future-proof your energy use - so you can be confident the recommendation is based on your actual needs, not a one-size-fits-all approach.
2. How much will I actually save?
Savings depend on how much of your solar power you use directly, rather than how much your panels produce. Ask for an estimate of your self-consumption, payback period, and long-term savings. It’s always a good idea to request a personalised estimate based on your current power bill and usage patterns.
3. What panels and inverter are being used?
Not all solar products perform the same. Ask about the brand, warranty, and efficiency of the panels and inverter. A reputable provider will be transparent about their products. Ideally, look for panels with at least a 25-year performance warranty. Rheem partners with trusted, high-performance brands to ensure your system is built to last.
4. Who will install the system?
The quality of installation is just as important as the quality of the gear. Make sure your installer is a licensed electrician with solar experience, and ask whether the company uses in-house installers or subcontractors.
5. What happens if something goes wrong?
Solar systems are generally low-maintenance, but it’s good to know what support looks like if there’s an issue. Ask about monitoring, warranty coverage, and service response times. Choosing a provider with strong local support, like Rheem Solar Solutions, means help is never far away.
6. Can I add a battery later?
Even if you’re not ready for a battery now, it’s smart to think ahead. Ask if your system is battery-ready and what upgrade options exist. All Rheem Solar systems are designed with future battery integration in mind, so you can expand when the time is right.
7. What’s included in the quote?
A clear, itemised quote helps you compare options fairly. Check that it includes installation, hardware, monitoring, and any potential extras like scaffolding or switchboard upgrades.
