Spanning 270 pages, the book brings together 20 curated homes by Alex Urena Design Studio, offering insight into the residential design practice’s approach to custom homes, renovations and place-led design. Through project photography by Shaw Photography, writing by Jane Riley and Alex’s own preliminary hand-drawn sketches, the publication traces the ideas, challenges and methods behind each project.
At its heart, 20 Australian Homes is a study of connection. The book explores how a home can reflect the lives of its owners while remaining deeply attuned to the land on which it sits. For Alex, who moved from Lima, Peru to Bulli in the Illawarra in 2010, the region’s coastal edge, escarpment and distinct sense of lifestyle have become central to his work.

The publication also reflects Alex’s belief that residential designers play an active role in shaping the character of a place. As the Illawarra has evolved, so too has the responsibility to design homes that respond to family life while remaining in sync with their surroundings.
Alex Urena Design Studio: 20 Australian Homes is proudly printed in Australia and is available via the Alex Urena Design Studio website.
