With a plethora of options available, how do you select the right hardware? Here, we uncover how to balance functionality and aesthetics when choosing hardware.
When choosing hardware it’s important to first thoroughly understand the functional needs of the hardware, which includes the longevity (and durability of the hardware) as well as the ease of use.
“Prioritise the end-user experience,” shares Mardeco’s Mark Rich. “Hardware should be intuitive and easy to operate, enhancing useability without sacrificing functionality.”
Whether the project aesthetic is contemporary or traditional, minimalist or classic, ensuring the hardware aligns with the overall design language of the project must be weighed against its functionality. It’s crucial to balance both aspects, says Rich.
“Hardware can either blend in subtly or serve as a focal point in the design. Balance is key. Too much emphasis on aesthetics might compromise functionality while focusing solely on functionality might lead to a less visually appealing design.”
Key factors when choosing architectural hardware
Material choice is important, because different materials have different outcomes for performance, durability and appearance, depending on their application and use.
“Each component material in our products is carefully selected to find the balance between appearance and durability,” shares Rich. “For example, using both brass and stainless material within our M Series range locks ensures that the lock will operate smoothly and quietly time after time.”
The other key factor to both appearance and durability is the coating process. Due to physical vapour disposition (PVD) technology a huge range of colours and textures are now possible.
“A number of our products are now coated with PVD. This coating process involves heating the material (a metal) in a vacuum chamber until it vaporises, forming a thin protective and very durable coating (with no hazardous chemicals) in a great range of colours.”
Not only does this technology allow a range of different design options that weren’t possible in the past, it greatly increases in durability and reduces maintenance requirements.
Available in various finishes, including PVD Black, Bronze and Satin Brass, the M-Series hardware can be tailored to suit your project's specific needs, enhancing your space's overall aesthetic.
The latest trends in sliding door hardware
In the past there were limited options for sliding door hardware, which meant designers had to compromise on design continuity within their interior. Mardeco’s extensive M Series now comes in an oval format, offering even more design flexibility.
“Our new M Series oval sliding door hardware range is an extension of our already successful M Series range designed back in 2014 offering both functionality and aesthetic appeal, catering to the ever-increasing demand for cavity and sliding doors.”
Mardeco’s Oval 9000 series sliding door hardware incorporates the same mechanisms that ensure smooth and quiet operation along with the same selection of stunning finishes. The inspiration behind the design of this new range was developed in line with the trend for biophilic design, which takes its cues from the curves of nature.
“Oval shapes are back in a big way with door arches, mirrors, light switches, baths and basins. Oval shapes often convey a sense of elegance and smoothness and can blend well with various interior styles, from contemporary and minimalist to classic and traditional,” shares Rich.
The M Series range offers versatility as it’s suitable for various types of sliding doors including timber and aluminium doors. This flexibility allows architects and designers to integrate the hardware into different spatial layouts.
“The design of our sliding door hardware focuses on modern aesthetics, with sleek lines and minimalist profiles. This makes it suitable for contemporary interior settings with its radius curves and minimalist profile, creating a statement piece that enhances any room.
“The new sliding door hardware range is crafted with a blend of innovation, quality craftsmanship, and aesthetic appeal, making it an ideal choice for modern architectural projects seeking reliable and stylish sliding door solutions.”
As with all Mardeco products, the 9000 Oval M-Series is designed in New Zealand, reflecting the company's commitment to quality, design, and good service. Mardeco's dedication to excellence is evident in every detail of this hardware range, from the meticulously crafted handles to the thoughtfully designed packaging.
Looking after architectural hardware to ensure longevity
Your choice of architectural hardware will have the biggest impact on its longevity, but there are several other factors that contribute to durability.
“One of the key elements of product durability is correct installation. Proper installation prevents premature wear, misalignment, and operational issues that can arise from improper fitting,” shares Rich.
Mardeco tries to eliminate these issues by providing full instruction information sheets, perforated cardboard templates, and animated video instructions.
“As with most products in the home or workplace, to maintain product appearance and durability, products need an appropriate cleaning schedule,” shares Rich. “Hardware is no different; using a soft damp cloth to remove dirt, debris and fingerprints is important, particularly from exterior application because both New Zealand and Australia’s harsh environment can damage the surface finish.”
Future trends in architectural hardware
In terms of design, materials, and technology, future trends in architectural hardware are likely to be influenced by advancements in design, materials, and technology, shares Rich.
“Advances in manufacturing techniques such as 3D printing may lead to more customised and personalised architectural hardware. Manufacturers may be able to design and produce smaller-run bespoke hardware solutions tailored to specific aesthetic and functional needs.”
