A combined 130 years of industry experience brings together handcrafted outdoor furniture with European-designed lighting in a new collaboration to elevate residential and commercial outdoor spaces.

With spring around the corner, many homeowners are eager to get their backyards and alfresco areas ready to enjoy balmy evenings outside.

According to a 2020 Westpac Survey, conducted by Lonergan Research, outdoor backyards (27%) and entertainment areas (18%) have a high priority on the list of homeowners. The research further suggests that people are seeking more space outdoors, proximity to parks and beaches, and even larger properties. And backyards, outdoor entertainment and balconies were three of the five most important home features.

Properly planned and implemented lighting has many benefits, it enhances both aesthetics and functionality of outdoor spaces. And because Aussies love entertaining outdoors, proper lighting ensures that guests can move around comfortably no matter what the time of day and enjoy the party.

The lighting design outside your home can complement the overall design theme of the property and outdoor space, including the furniture to create a cohesive and stylish look.

Harnessing these trends, the two Australian brands, Harbour and Special Lights, have joined forces to help homeowners make the most of their outdoor spaces by offering stunning outdoor furniture in combination with European-designed lighting fixtures.

“Outdoor lighting should be designed to adapt to the changing seasons to create inviting spaces throughout the year,” says Amy Harper-Pell, Design Services Manager at Special Lights.

And because the Australian climate favours the use of outdoor spaces all year round, the right lighting sets the tone and ambience in any backyard. Whether people prefer a cosy and intimate atmosphere to relax in or a lively mood for a party, lighting can play a significant role in creating the desired atmosphere.

Both partners prioritise quality when it comes to their products. With Australia’s harsh weather conditions, durable materials are essential and will ensure longevity, saving money in the long run, and bringing more joy to the people who use them.

“When it comes to the outdoors, particularly in Australia’s harsh climates, the quality of furniture and lighting is essential,” says Patryc Lampasi, Showroom & Sales Manager for Harbour. The Australian lifestyle brand has been designing, manufacturing and distributing premium furniture collections for over 40 years and specialises in residential and hospitality applications, with furniture specified in some of the most acclaimed projects around the world.

“The initial investment in quality products with durable materials will ensure longevity, meaning you will avoid replacing your furnishings more regularly,” adds Amy.

Lighting can also enhance the seamless transition between indoor and outdoor areas of the home.

“Strategically illuminating outdoor areas to create a dedicated dining area, lounge space or relaxation corner transforms these spaces into inviting and functional extensions of any home,” explains Amy.

For those who want to get a sneak peek at the joint offerings, both companies operate showrooms in Sydney’s suburb of Waterloo and provide tailored services to Australia's architecture and design community.
