Tallira's story began almost two decades ago with a conversation at an international trade fair, where founder Simon Robinson crossed paths with long-time industry colleague Yosi Tal. Both had spent years immersed in the rug industry and recognised an opportunity: while bespoke rugs occupied one end of the market, there was room for thoughtfully designed, premium-quality collections that were readily available, locally stocked and more accessible to designers.
That conversation became the foundation of what was then known as The Rug Collection.
From the outset, the business was built around wholesale. Interior designers, furniture retailers and property stylists became its core customers, while its collections quickly found their way into homes through some of Australia's best-known retailers. Every design was created in-house before being brought to life by master artisans in India, where Robinson has spent years cultivating relationships with manufacturing partners who have become friends as much as collaborators.
"We've never been interested in creating more of the same," says Tallira's Kylie Alexander. "Every collection has its own distinct point of view, but what never changes is our commitment to quality, craftsmanship and timeless design."
That commitment to originality has remained consistent, even as the business itself has evolved.
As Robinson continued travelling internationally to source new collections, it became increasingly difficult to ignore the relationship between rugs and the furniture that surrounded them. At one trade fair, a minimalist sectional sofa caught his attention.
"Simon has always trusted his instinct," Alexander says. "Furniture wasn't about moving away from rugs, it was about building on what we'd already created. It allowed us to think beyond the floor and consider the entire room."

What began with a handful of carefully selected pieces has steadily grown into a considered furniture collection that now sits comfortably alongside Tallira's rugs. Sofas, occasional chairs and coffee tables are curated with the same philosophy that shaped the original business: timeless foundations, tactile materials and an emphasis on quality over quantity.
The shift has been so natural that the company's biggest challenge has become perception.
"We still hear it almost every week," Alexander says. "'I didn't realise you sold furniture.' People assume it's simply there to style the rugs, but that's exactly why the rebrand became so important."
It's a challenge that reflects just how successfully the business established itself within the design industry. But it also prompted the next stage of its evolution.
Over the past three years, Tallira has invested heavily in expansive new showrooms in Melbourne and Sydney, creating gallery-like spaces where furniture and rugs can be experienced together rather than as separate products. The restrained interiors allow texture, materiality and craftsmanship to take centre stage, giving designers an immersive environment to explore the collections and visualise complete interior schemes.

The business has also quietly expanded beyond its wholesale roots.
For years, Tallira received enquiries from customers wanting to purchase directly, only to discover that nearby stockists didn't carry the specific design they were looking for.
"Opening to retail felt like a natural evolution for the business," Alexander says. "It gave more people access to our collections while allowing us to continue supporting the designers and trade partners who have always been central to who we are."
Dedicated trade support continues to sit at the heart of Tallira's business, reflecting the relationships that have shaped the brand since its earliest days.
It's an approach that aligns naturally with platforms like ArchiPro, where professionals can move seamlessly between inspiring projects, the products that bring them to life and the experts behind them. As Tallira's offering continues to expand, that connected ecosystem becomes increasingly valuable for designers specifying complete interior schemes.
That evolution also prompted a broader brand transition. As the furniture collection grew, the business name ‘The Rug Collection’ no longer reflected the full breadth of what it had become. Enter Tallira, a name that better reflects its future while honouring its origins. It combines Yossi Tal's surname with Robinson's daughter, Allira, creating a new identity grounded in both family and legacy.
Today, Tallira continues to refine its rug collections with distinctive patterns, rich textures and innovative materials while introducing increasingly sophisticated furniture collections, including European-made pieces and customisable options. Throughout every decision, however, the guiding principle remains unchanged.
"Our collections are designed to be lived with for years, not just admired for a season," Alexander says. "For us, timeless materials, craftsmanship and longevity will always matter more than what's fashionable.”
It's an approach that has carried Tallira from a niche wholesale rug supplier to a complete interiors destination, proving that sometimes the strongest brands don't reinvent themselves, they simply evolve, one carefully considered layer at a time.
