Build smarter decks with Viking Roofspec’s innovative floating deck solutions

Meeting the demand for modern outdoor living

In the world of modern architecture and landscaping, the seamless integration of indoor and outdoor living spaces has become more than just a design trend – it’s an essential part of today’s lifestyle.

Zane Carpenter, Viking Roofspec Technical Manager.

Viking Roofspec’s answer to this is two innovative floating deck systems that effortlessly transform outdoor spaces, balconies, and pool areas. These cutting-edge solutions – the Silca/Buzon System and the TreadTech/Buzon System – offer impressive versatility, durability, and ease of installation for homeowners, builders, architects, and landscaping specialists.

“We’re always looking for ways to innovate, and the market has been asking for these types of systems,” shares Zane Carpenter, Technical Manager for Viking Roofspec.

A blend of precision engineering, sustainable innovation and structural excellence

The Silca/Buzon System

This system features a series of New Zealand-manufactured, load-bearing grates constructed entirely from recycled, UV-stable, engineered polymer. These durable grates connect together seamlessly to create a platform that serves as the foundation for floating decks and tiled or paved landscaping areas. It’s a design that makes paving and tiling remarkably simple, fast, and robust, establishing it as the only locally available structural grate floating deck system.

“This modular system is a game-changer that allows you to bring tiles from the inside out,” says Zane. “It also allows for a more stable tile to be placed on any deck – we’re taking out the guesswork with this system.”

The TreadTech/Buzon System

The TreadTech System offers a sophisticated aluminium frame solution that supports floating deck surfaces using timber or composite planking, structural tiles or pavers. The system’s intelligent design provides two distinct configuration options to accommodate varying project requirements and spatial constraints.

Its superior durability and stability ensure that decks built with this system withstand all weather conditions, significantly increasing both the life and stability of the installation. Designed for cost efficiency and simplicity, the system also maintains exceptional load capacity, engineered to handle significant weight while ensuring both safety and longevity.

A strong foundation

The secret to both systems’ exceptional performance lies in Viking’s Buzon pedestal technology, a series of precision-engineered screw-jack pedestals that support floating deck surfaces across various applications.

Viking’s Buzon pedestal system addresses one of the most challenging aspects of deck design: creating a seamless transition between interior and exterior spaces while ensuring proper drainage and moisture management. The pedestals enable exterior deck surfaces to align perfectly with interior floor levels, maintaining the visual and functional continuity that modern design demands.

“Pedestals are a great system for residential projects, and with large commercial projects there are often time-consuming factors that these systems can mitigate to avoid delays,” says Zane. “Our pedestal is a click-on system – you just twist the top to set the height, set the slope corrector to the appropriate slope, and you’re done.”

Transforming building spaces

Suitable for a wide range of applications, these systems address common challenges. Elevated or raised decks benefit enormously from these systems, particularly in situations involving sloping sections or second-storey living areas. The ability to transform challenging topography into stunning, functional outdoor spaces opens up new possibilities for property development and renovation projects.

Retrofits especially benefit from these innovative systems. Their design specifically accommodates existing structures, making them ideal for upgrading older buildings or adapting spaces for new uses. The simple installation process minimises disruption to occupied buildings while delivering dramatic improvements in functionality and appearance.

“A Buzon pedestal can go as low as 3mm (using tiles) plus the tile thickness of say, 20mm, so in the case of older buildings with minimal door threshold heights, you can match indoor and outdoor tiles with a seamless transition.”

Both systems have been meticulously engineered in New Zealand to meet the unique requirements of residential and commercial environments.

Viking Roofspec’s floating deck systems represent not just a solution to current challenges, but a foundation for the future of outdoor living design – where the boundaries between indoor and outdoor spaces continue to blur, creating environments that enhance both the value and enjoyment of our built spaces.
