Designers are set to make a statement with custom rugs by Wautier Carpets.
Creating a buzz in the interior design scene this winter, bespoke carpets and rugs are transforming spaces for homeowners and designers through personalised textiles and patterns. In this article, learn how a customised approach underfoot can elevate residential and commercial interiors.
Beyond offering a practical and sensory flooring solution, custom rugs and carpets can make all the difference in creating a welcoming atmosphere for those who visit or dwell.
“Because carpets cover such a large portion of the visual field, they have a powerful influence on how a room feels,” explains Chanel Bragg, Creative Director at Wautier Carpets.
“People often underestimate how much atmosphere, colour balance, and texture a custom rug can bring. Whether it anchors the space or adds contrast, a well-designed carpet or rug can tie everything together while quietly commanding attention,” adds Chanel.
Founded in 2022, Wautier Carpets offers bespoke carpet and rug designs and weaves for interior designers who want to elevate their latest projects. From luxurious residences and hotels to high-end retail stores, Wautier Carpets is a unique and practical way to enhance the elegance and comfort of these spaces.

How to design custom rugs and carpets for your project
Wautier Carpets encourages designers to merge their vision with the company’s expertise in weaving, tufting and printing.
“Understanding how carpets are made isn’t taught in design school,” explains Chanel. “So, leaning on experienced makers is key. At Wautier Carpets, we host regular education events in our showroom to support this process.”
As digital tools and global manufacturing networks have expanded, clients now have direct access to designers and makers that were once out of reach. “In some cases, you can get a custom-designed piece for the same price as a stock option,” says Chanel.
Chanel notes that this shift has opened up the world of custom rugs to a much wider audience. “With more market offerings pushing the boundaries of design, people are turning to bespoke options as a way to express individuality in both residential and commercial interiors.”

Top trending bespoke carpet and rug designs in Australia
Chanel shares the top trending carpet and rug designs and materiality, noting its Lumi Silk, a Wautier Carpets exclusive fibre. As the hardest-wearing of the shiny fibres, Lumi Silk offers exceptional durability paired with an unmistakably luxurious to-the-touch finish.
“Carpet is, at its core, yarn,” says Chanel. “The choice of fibre impacts everything from texture and luxury to durability and cleanability.”
“At Wautier, our Ikon print technique brings striking, large-scale patterning into residential interiors. This contemporary design tool allows for bold expression with refined affordability.”
Originally introduced as an alternative to raw silk, Bamboo options provide a natural sheen and softness well-suited to modern family living, while also being a sustainable material choice. “We have seen Tencel establish itself as a favourite among clients for its silk-like feel and its cleaner, chemical-free production process compared to viscose or rayon,” adds Chanel.
For designers and homeowners looking to create a custom rug or carpet for their project, Chanel suggests, “Function should always lead the design, so consider how the space will be used and what the carpet needs to withstand.”
“From there, you can push boundaries creatively, designing something truly unique.”
