Let there be light: why you should consider hiring an architectural lighting designer

Many new builds often come with standard builder-grade downlights. These lights are typically installed in large quantities, creating a grid-like pattern on the ceiling that can be unappealing. Builder-grade downlights also tend to produce harsh, unflattering light that can make rooms feel uninviting and cold, with this particularly evident in living rooms, bedrooms, and bathrooms. These downlights can create glare and shadows, which can be distracting and can make it difficult to appreciate artwork, furniture, and other decor elements in your home.

While there’s no shortage of chic and elegant lighting alternatives – think pendant lights, chandeliers, wall sconces, and table lamps – it can be difficult to ascertain how best to utilise these to enhance and highlight your space.

Mint Lighting Design specialises in architectural lighting design, providing customers with professional advice across all residential and commercial projects of all sizes and empowering them with the ability to make the right lighting choices for their spaces. Mint Lighting Design does not design or sell light fittings and fixtures themselves, instead showcasing the multivarious ways lighting can be used to enhance the aesthetic and functional aspects of a building, while also providing a safe and comfortable environment for the people who use it.

Helmed by designer Adele Locke, Mint Lighting Design considers both the science and art of lighting to create inviting spaces that stand the test of time. Here’s why you should consider utilising an architectural lighting designer in your next project.

A lighting designer will also consider the architectural elements of your space and how lighting can be used to enhance these features, with Mint Lighting Design working collaboratively with clients to provide expert advice to create beautiful and functional lighting solutions. Whether you’re looking to create a sense of awe and drama in your home or simply make it a more warm and inviting place to spend time in, enlisting a lighting designer can help make the most of your space. Plus, they will also take into account the natural light in the space and how to enhance or control it.

In addition to considering functionality and aesthetics, lighting designers also take energy efficiency and overall sustainability into account. With their finger on the pulse of new and innovative technologies and trends, Mint Lighting Design can help you choose fixtures and controls that will save you money on energy costs in the long run. They will also consider the environmental impact of the lighting fixtures and bulbs you choose and can advise on options that have a lower carbon footprint.

While many builder-grade homes contain consistent lighting plans that see bedrooms lit like kitchens and vice versa, Mint Lighting Design takes a more nuanced approach. They understand how different types of light can affect the mood and functionality of a room; in bedrooms, warm and soft light is often desired to create a relaxing and calming atmosphere, while in a kitchen, task lighting is preferred for food preparation and cooking.

Ambient lighting is often employed in living rooms to create an inviting atmosphere for entertaining, while a combination of task and ambient light in a home office can be used to stimulate both focused work and mental relaxation.
